Lulama in-patient treatment centre established in 1961 has to date treated
13,620 people. Lulama is the Zulu word meaning place of healing. We provide
a specialised treatment programme for alcoholism and drug dependence. Our
multi-disciplinary team involved in the treatment consists of social
workers, nursing sisters, occupational therapists, ministers of religion,
doctors, psychiatrists and clinical psychologists. Understanding and
acceptance of alcoholism/drug dependence as illnesses. Development of a
sense of self-worth. Leading a normal life without alcohol/drugs.
Identification and involvement with others who are alcohol/drug dependent
The Penthouse out-patient clinic has treated 9362 people since its inception
in 1977. The Penthouse clinic provides a daily out-patient facility for the
treatment of alcoholism and drug dependence. The advantages of a daily
out-patient centre are that the patient is treated with minimum absenteeism
from work and is also able to achieve sobriety in his or her normal
environment. The multi-disciplinary approach involves the following:
Personal counseling by social workers, group therapy including didactic and
growth groups (conducted in Zulu for Zulu speaking patients), medical
treatment by clinical staff, exposure to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
Prevention, Education and Training To reduce the stigma and ignorance
associated with chemical dependence we have spoken to more than 1.5 million
people in the past years. This self-help movement was started by SANCA in
1986. There are in excess of 80 groups at different high schools. This
involves the training of concerned members of the congregation to alleviate
suffering amongst parishioners. A deafening silence often surrounds the
alcoholic/drug dependent. This conspiracy of silence by the family,
employer, minister, doctor and friends is caused primarily by not knowing
how to deal with the situation. Silence is the worst treatment for these
diseases. That every chemical dependent person adversely affects from 7 to
17 other people. The annual loss to the South African economy caused by
absenteeism is in excess of R2 billion. The Employee Assistance Programme
(EAP) seeks to address unnecessary absenteeism caused by personal problems.
We have been actively involved in training employee assistance programme
co-ordinators for commerce and industry during the past 16 years. We also
offer an employee assistance programme consultancy. The initial assessment
of your company needs is a free service. Anybody who is concerned about
their own or another person's drinking and/or drugging. All enquiries are
handled in the strictest confidence. Most people contact us as a last
resort, resulting in years of unnecessary suffering by the dependent and the
people close to him or her.
We encourage people to contact us the very first time they become concerned
about someone's drining or drugging. Do not delay. Not at all. To do nothing
may resulting you having to attend this person's funeral. Contacting us does
require some courage. It is our sense of responsibility which provides us
with the necessary strength. The recovery process starts from the first
contact with us.
